Protecting schools from pesticides.

چکیده
-Recently developed techniques for the investigation of iron kinetics were used to study the disturbance of iron metabolism in 19 untreated patients with Hodgkin's diseases (HD). The erythroid abnormality in newly diagnosed HD appears to be confined to those patients with systemic symptoms of weight loss, night sweats and fever, and consists of depression of marrow erythroid activity. These patients had a significantly lower haemoglobin and serum iron concentration and a higher serum ferritin concentration, both when compared to normal subjects and to those patients with HD who lacked systemic symptoms. Ineffective erythropoiesis and redcell destruction were not significantly increased. The present findings confirm that HD patients with systemic symptoms have a depression of erythropoiesis, and that in these patients the marrow fails to respond to the stimulus of mild anaemia.

Healthy Schools Act spurs integrated pest management in California public schools
B 2001, the kinds and amounts of pesticides used in public schools were mysteries to many Californians. For some parents, these mysteries were worrisome. California lawmakers aimed to address these concerns by passing the Healthy Schools Act of 2000 (HSA), which established right-to-know requirements for pesticide use (see sidebar, page 236) in public schools and required all school districts t...
متن کاملAcute illnesses associated with pesticide exposure at schools.
CONTEXT Pesticides continue to be used on school property, and some schools are at risk of pesticide drift exposure from neighboring farms, which leads to pesticide exposure among students and school employees. However, information on the magnitude of illnesses and risk factors associated with these pesticide exposures is not available. OBJECTIVE To estimate the magnitude of and associated ri...
متن کاملWill buffer zones around schools in agricultural areas be adequate to protect children from the potential adverse effects of pesticide exposure?
California has proposed limiting agricultural pesticide use within 0.4 km of schools and childcare facilities. However, the 0.4-km buffer may not be appropriate for all pesticides because of differing toxicities, fate, and application methods. Living near pesticide use has been associated with poorer birth outcomes, neurodevelopment, and respiratory function in children. More research about exp...
متن کاملEnvironmental Management for Arable Agriculture: an Eco-rating System for Pesticide Use
The University of Hertfordshire, funded by MAFF and in collaboration with ADAS and IACRRothamsted, is currently developing a computer-based decision support system to encourage and enhance best practice within arable agriculture such that environmental protection can be given a high priority without jeopardising profitability. A significant part of this system is focused towards the use and man...
متن کاملAntioxidant and Protective Effects of Plant Extract against Deltamethrin-induced Oxidative Stress in Liver and Kidney – A Review
Deltamethrin is one of the most commonly used Pyrethroid around the world. Oxidative stress is one of the most deltamethrin toxicity mechanisms. According to many studies, it has been shown that the liver, due to its role, is the main source of accumulation of high concentrations of deltamethrin metabolites. Also the kidney plays a very important role in regulating homeostasis of the body and r...
متن کاملEnvironmental medicine, part 4: pesticides - biologically persistent and ubiquitous toxins.
Although the use of pesticides has doubled every ten years since 1945, pest damage to crops is more prevalent now than it was then. Many pests are now pesticide resistant due to the ubiquitous presence of pesticides in our environment. Chlorinated pesticide residues are present in the air, soil, and water, with a concomitant presence in humans. Organophosphate and carbamate pesticides - the com...
